What is the Use of Education?

The use of education is to place young minds around those who are exemplars of what it means to be human, and also (contrary to popular belief) not to teach specific facts (because facts are soon forgotten) but rather to develop an appreciation for the complexity of almost everything and thus be less vulnerable to being deceived and hoodwinked by nonsense. Finally it’s to encourage student’s curiosity and pro-active stance towards the mysteries and dilemmas that life throws our way.

Beyond that, it is to enjoy oneself. As Dewey once remarked, education is not just preparation for living – it is living.
